For the American segment of Formula 1, 2022 is a landmark year already because two major races will be held in the United States. This has not happened in the USA since 1984. In addition, the Americans have announced the creation of their team, which intends to apply for the Formula 1 as the 11th stable.
In February, legendary motor racing driver Mario Andretti, the 1978 world champion, announced that his son Michael wanted to set up his own team. Andretti senior posted a message to this effect on Twitter.
The tweet was almost a sensation in the world of motorsport, with only 10 teams represented in the championship for a long time. Whether an 11th will emerge is still hard to say. If the talks about the purchase of the team “Alfa Romeo”, which was also conducted by the Andretti family, did not embarrass the leadership of the F-1, the intention of the influential in the world of motorsports family to create their own team has not been a little quiet.
It’s still difficult to say whether there will be an 11th participating team in the world of motor racing. But we can already say with certainty that not all of the “native inhabitants” of the world of F-1 are excited about it. And the reasons for this are several.
A financial reason. The prize fund of the races, formed from the income from TV broadcasts, is now distributed among the ten teams. And the appearance of the eleventh applicant for their piece of this “pie” does not please the other applicants.
Political reason. In the world of Formula 1, there are several factions, which in some ways compete with each other, in some ways can support each other, and even some faction in some cases can lobby for the interests of another faction. The emergence of a new team in this system is bound to upset the status quo and may even lead to some change in the “rules of the game”. Such hassles are not to everyone’s liking.
Competitor factor. Family Andretti – not the only representative of the U.S., wishing to become the 11th Formula 1 team. Haas is a serious contender for this right. However, Andretti will surely have much better starting positions, than those that now have Gene Haas.
In the world of Formula 1 top managers of the championship to put it mildly not particularly supportive of Michael Andretti creating his own team, because they hope that he still decides to become an investor of the already existing team. After all, the star family was negotiating about the purchase of the Alfa Romeo, the truth is that it never led to the result. And among the ten active teams there are others who are open to dialogue. But Andretti Global say they are firmly resolved to create a team of their own.
If the team does get established and can make the thorny way to the start on the main racing circuits, the fans of Formula 1 will only benefit. Andretti are not the kind of people who will settle for the lot of the mediocre and certainly not the outsiders. Serious aggravation of the struggle on the track after the emergence of the 11th team is guaranteed. For sure there will be new cars to delight the fans with interesting technical solutions.
The Andretti family, with a combined experience of more than 60 years in motorsport, deserve to be represented by their own team in F1.
